Richard Hatch was an American television actor, writer and producer. He starred as “Captain Apollo” in the 1978 Battlestar Galactica series and later as “Tom Zarek” in the 2003 remake. His acting credits include All My Children, The Streets of San Francisco, and the film Party Line. Richard Lawrence Hatch was born on May 21, 1945 in Santa Monica, California. He attended Los Angeles Harbor College. He also took classical piano lessons as a child.

CAREER
Hatch began his career as a stage actor with the Los Angeles Repertory Theater. He appeared in a number of Off Broadway plays and musicals in the 1960s. He won an Obie Award for is role in James Kirkwood, Jr.’s play, P.S. Your Cat Is Dead. Hatch landed his first television appearance as “Philip Brent” in a 1970 episode of the soap, All My Children. He held that role until 1972. Hatch followed up with small roles in series like Barnaby Jones, Hawaii Five-O and The Waltons. His next big role was that of inspector “Dan Robbins” in the crime-drama series, The Streets of San Francisco (1976-77). He held a recurring role as “Harmon Farinella” in the soap, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman (1977-78), starring Louise Lasser.

Hatch starred as “Captain Apollo” in the original sci-fi series, Battlestar Galactica. His role earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for best actor in a television series. The show was created by Glen A. Larson. It ran on ABC from September 1978 to April 1979 for a total of 24 episodes. Hatch returned in the 2003 version of Battlestar Galactica as “Tom Zarek”, a terrorist turned politician. The series remake was executive produced by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick. Hatch held prominent roles in the series Dynasty (1970) and Santa Barbara (1990). His film credits include Best Friends (1975), Prisoners of the Lost Universe (1983) and Party Line (1988).

In addition to acting, Hatch was a writer and motivational speaker. He wrote a series of Battlestar novels which included Armageddon (1997), Resurrection (1998), Paradis (2003) and Redemption (2005).

Richard Hatch died on February 7, 2017 at the age of 71. His official cause of death was pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his son, Paul Michael, and his brother, John.
